Every LSR OEM supplier can show you ISO certificates, a clean factory floor, and a wall of finished samples. That's the easy part of an audit — and it's also the part that tells you the least about whether that factory can deliver 500,000 consistent parts six months from now.
If you're sourcing an overseas manufacturing partner for silicone components — medical, automotive, or consumer — the certificates confirm the factory can meet a standard. They don't tell you whether it will, shot after shot, batch after batch. Here's what experienced buyers actually look at, beyond the paperwork.
Almost every factory has a documented process control plan. Far fewer can pull up real production data on demand — cavity pressure logs, cycle time trends, or SPC charts for a part currently in production. Documentation shows what the factory intends to do. Live data shows what it's actually doing.
What to ask for: Request the SPC chart or process log for a running job, not a demo sample. Watch how quickly and confidently the team can produce it. A factory that treats process monitoring as routine will have this ready in minutes; one that treats it as a compliance exercise will need to "pull it together."
Pick a finished part on the shelf and ask the factory to walk it backward: which mold, which machine, which raw material lot, which shift, which QC record. This single exercise reveals more about actual traceability than any ISO binder.
What to look for: Whether the trace is genuinely fast and complete, or whether it stalls at any step — especially at the raw material lot level. For medical or automotive parts, an inability to trace to raw material batch is a disqualifying gap, regardless of what the quality manual says.
A factory floor full of injection molding machines tells you what the facility could produce at full utilization — not what capacity is actually open for your order, or how that capacity is currently allocated across other customers. This is one of the most common gaps between what buyers assume during a facility tour and what they experience once production starts.
What to ask: Current utilization rate by machine type relevant to your part, and how many of those machines are already committed to long-term contracts. A factory confident in its numbers will answer directly. Vague or evasive answers here are a signal worth taking seriously.
Audits are almost always scheduled during the day shift, when staffing, supervision, and housekeeping are at their best. Process discipline that holds up on a scheduled tour doesn't always hold up on a Saturday night shift six months into production. Where possible, ask for shift-change logs, or off-hours production photos/video, rather than relying solely on what's visible during a daytime visit.
What to ask for: Machine operator logs across all shifts for the past month, and whether the same QC procedures apply regardless of shift or day of week.
Every OEM job hits a first-article or early-production issue sooner or later — a dimensional drift, a cure-related defect, an assembly fit problem. What separates a reliable partner from a risky one isn't whether problems happen; it's how the factory diagnoses and resolves them.
What to ask: For a specific, recent example of a quality deviation on another customer's job, and how it was investigated and closed out. A factory that can walk through a real corrective action process — root cause, containment, permanent fix, verification — is demonstrating a functioning quality system. A factory that can only describe its process in the abstract has likely not been tested by a real problem yet, or doesn't document it well when it happens.
For LSR parts specifically, tool wear directly affects flash, venting, and dimensional consistency over the tool's life. Ask who owns the mold, how maintenance is scheduled, and what triggers a re-polish or refurbishment cycle — proactive maintenance intervals, or reactive fixes only after defects appear.
What to ask: Maintenance log for a mold that has run a comparable volume to your projected annual quantity. This tells you what your tool will look like — and what your defect rate will look like — at year two, not just at first article.
Silicone surfaces attract dust and static readily, and this is a step that's frequently underestimated until parts arrive at the customer's dock with visible contamination. This applies especially to medical and infant-care parts, where post-molding handling can undo upstream quality control.
What to ask: Walk the packaging line specifically, separate from the molding floor. Ask how parts are protected between demolding and final packaging, and whether cleanroom or controlled-environment packaging is used where the application requires it.
None of these checks replace the standard certification review — ISO 9001, IATF 16949, or medical-grade material documentation are still baseline requirements. But certificates confirm a system exists on paper. The checks above confirm whether that system is actually running the floor day to day, under normal production pressure, not just during a scheduled visit.
