Plastic Injection Mold or LSR Injection Mold | Detailed Guide

By Dyanne May 7th, 2025 463 views

Introduction

Plastic injection molding and LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber) injection molding are two common methods for producing rigid plastic and flexible silicone parts, respectively. Plastic injection molding has been in existence since 1872 and is now utilized in many different applications, ranging from everyday items to medical devices. The type of mould required depends on how  it will be used, its cost, and the level of quality it needs to have.

Plastic Mold vs LSR Injection Mold

The Plastic Injection Mold

Plastic injection molding is a method of making plastic parts. It involves injecting melted plastic into a metal mold.

The first plastic injection molding machine was created in 1872 by American inventor John Wesley Hyatt.

He originally wanted to replace ivory billiard balls with plastic ones. The balls did not work, but his machine did. Since then, the injection molding industry has grown quickly. It started with making simple things like buttons, but now it makes complex products such as medical devices.

Plastic injection molding begins with melting thermoplastic pellets. The pellets are placed into a hopper and then fed into a heated barrel. Inside, a screw moves backward to create space, then pushes forward to force the melted plastic through a nozzle.

The platen presses down on the nozzle and mold, which helps to prevent leaks. The melted plastic is then injected into the mold, filling all the spaces and pushing out the air through holes as it flows into every corner.

The mold must remain at a steady temperature, which is the same as the specific material's melting point. This ensures that the part inside can cool and harden evenly. Additionally, the pressure must remain the same so that the material does not flow back into the barrel. More pellets are added to the machine, allowing it to continue working. When the part is cooled and removed, it can be reused.

What Is an LSR Injection Mold?

LSR injection molds are used for producing flexible, biocompatible parts using two-part liquid silicone rubber. This is ideal for soft-touch, skin-contact, or milk-contact components like flanges, sealing valves, or membranes.

Key Features:

Involves a 1:1 mixing of LSR A and B components.

Cured at high temperatures (160–180°C).

Requires cold runner systems and precision dosing pumps.

Produces flash-free, precision parts ideal for medical and baby care applications.

How to choose lsr injection mold machine?

The processing of silica gel products, production cost, production efficiency and production quality are three key factors.

Production Cost: For silicone injection molding machines, power consumption, raw material usage, and labor costs are the three major components; silicone injection molding machines equipped with servo motors have a much lower total power consumption compared to modified machines, with a power difference of 13 kW.

This can save approximately 50,000 yuan in electricity costs annually, equivalent to one production worker's annual salary.

Injection molding machines using small screws and straight compression barrels have less raw material waste, saving 5KG of resin per cleaning cycle; liquid silicone injection molding machines (liquid process) require only 1-2 workers, while traditional flat vulcanization machines (solid process) need 7-10 workers.

In this regard, liquid silicone injection molding machines significantly reduce labor costs.

Production Efficiency: Injection molding machines using small screws and straight compression barrels are easy to clean, saving time and improving production efficiency. Integrated machines with a single control panel are also convenient to operate, further enhancing production efficiency, which can increase by 20%.

Production Quality: Injection molding machines with high injection accuracy (up to 0.001g), good mold temperature control, and excellent clamping force control produce high-quality silicone products.

Conclusion

Choosing between plastic and LSR injection molds depends on your product function, budget, and market expectations. For breast pump components that require softness, safety, and performance, LSR molds offer a clear advantage.

If you're planning to develop, upgrade, or scale your silicone breast pump production, investing in high-quality LSR molds and machines is the key to long-term success.
